DIY Easter Egg Mail to Surprise and Delight

A few years ago, when I was living in California, I read somewhere that you could mail someone an Easter egg — just the egg, no box required. I immediately thought this was the funniest and most delightful idea. I loved the thought of someone opening their mailbox and finding a bright, colorful Easter egg tucked inside, completely unexpected.

That year, I wasn’t going to be able to travel home to see my family for Easter, so this felt like the perfect way to send a little holiday cheer from afar. I headed to Target (obviously) and picked up a pack of large plastic eggs, candy, and small toys that would fit inside. Once everything was filled, I sealed each egg with clear packing tape around the middle to make sure nothing would pop open during its journey all the way to Minnesota.

Dropping them off at the post office was half the fun. I definitely got a few funny looks as I set the eggs on the counter, and I fully expected the postal worker to tell me that mailing Easter eggs wasn’t allowed. Instead, they simply printed the postage labels, stuck them right on the eggs, and sent them on their way. Watching those little eggs head off through the mail system made me smile — and it turned out to be a simple, inexpensive way to surprise my family and feel a little more connected, even from across the country.

My brother wouldn’t open his easter egg mail because he thought it was a prank. I’m not sure what he thought would be inside, but was pleasantly  surprised when he found only candy and tiny toy chicks. You can also play a delightful game of Easter Chickers with those little toy chicks :)

Happy Easter,

How cute!! My kids would go nuts for these if they got one in the mailbox!
How funny your brother wouldn’t open his.. I’d probably have the same initial reaction with the scary state of the world right now.
Such a cute surprise for Easter! Thanks for the idea :)

Didn’t know you could make and ship items like this. How fun to make and receive.

This is the best idea ever! My mom, sister, and nephew all live in California. Rather then sending a big expensive box of Easter candy I am going to try this!
