While working as a nanny of 3 I found dinners were often more enjoyable if we played a game. One of the game we liked to play was “Through the Green Glass Door“. If you have not played this game before it is very simple. At least one of the players must know the rules of what can go through the green glass door and what cannot. Words with a pair of identical letters can go through the green glass door. Every person takes a turn guessing what can go through the green glass door. An example would be “I can take a book, but not a magazine through the green glass door.” People who know the rule have fun coming up with word pairs to confuse the other players. People who have not played before have fun trying to figure out what the rule is.
For Thanksgiving this year I changed up the game a tiny bit to fit in with a Thanksgiving theme. Instead of figuring out what can go through the green glass door, figure out what will be on your dinner plate.
Using the phrase “At my yummy Thanksgiving dinner I’ll eat…” as a starter for word pairs. Examples of correct statements would be:
” At my yummy Thanksgiving dinner I’ll eat carrots, but not corn.”
“At my yummy Thanksgiving dinner I’ll eat eggs, but not bacon.”
“At my yummy Thanksgiving dinner I’ll eat sweet potatoes, but not yams.”
“At my yummy Thanksgiving dinner I’ll eat cookies, but not pie.”
It will for sure be a fun time and can get especially silly as people start using the first word they can think of with an identical letter pair even if it is not a food. Does your family have any games you like to play at the dinner table? We’d love to hear your ideas.
