If you’re planning a birthday party for your kiddo, chances are you’ve considered Sesame Street as a theme. With its colorful cast of characters and fun-filled episodes, it’s no wonder Sesame Street is a favorite among kids and parents alike. This is the most popular party theme I have done and below are some ideas I have used that you can recreate for your party, or use many of them if doing a larger party with multiple tables and areas.
I chose many of these because I already owned the things I would need. It’s likely you also have a few plush Sesame Street characters and accessories that would work for your party. Use what you have around your house!
ELMO & DOROTHY:
Elmo and his pet goldfish Dorothy are a classic Sesame Street duo kids love. I created this centerpiece by placing a large Elmo plush toy beside a plastic fishbowl filled with pebbles, a birthday candle, and a small toy fish. In the older Elmo’s World episodes, Dorothy always had a small toy in her fish bowl that went with the theme of that day. I thought adding a birthday candle to the bowl was a fun addition. Obviously, you wouldn’t light it 🙂 Another party decoration was a large Elmo holding Dorothy and his phone, Smartie.

BIG BIRD & SNUFFLEUPAGUS
I think this is my favorite Sesame Street table decor. I created Big Bird and his best friend Snuffy by purchasing a large “nest” at my local craft store and giving both friends mini party hats. I also found a small teddy bear that worked as “Radar,” Big Bird’s beloved teddy bear. You can also add yellow feathers and greenery to create a playful and colorful look.

OSCAR THE GROUCH
When guests arrive, let Oscar “welcome” them into your home. I found this giant Oscar stuffie at a neighborhood yard sale, and my daughter loved carrying him around. I covered a large toy basket with tin foil and made a quick sign using scrap cardboard and a black Sharpie marker. I haven’t been able to find another large Oscar the Grouch, but you could always put a smaller one on a table near the door.
ERNIE & RUBBER DUCKIE
When I created my daughter’s Sesame Street Dollhouse, I had Ernie in a bathtub with crystal beads that looked like bubbles. I didn’t want to use beads here in case it got tipped over, so I instead used small white balloons. And, of course, Rubber Duckie is hangin’ in the tub alongside Ernie. If you purchase a pack of rubber duckies, they work great for fun party food.

ABBY CADABBY
Abby Cadabby is a beloved fairy-in-training on Sesame Street. Abby was my daughter’s favorite character growing up, and I had fun creating an Abby Halloween costume for her when she was three. You can create a whimsical centerpiece using streamers and a plush Abby Cadabby doll on the table. You could also add glittery stars or butterflies for an extra magical touch. I added streamers in a cross-cross pattern for a fast and inexpensive decoration.
If you have several Sesame Street character toys, create a fun centerpiece by lining them up in a row. My mom had saved my Sesame Street books, and I used them on the table along with Elmo, Big Bird, and Grover. You can also place them on a long table runner or fabric that matches your party’s color scheme. This will create a colorful and playful display that will make your child’s party extra special. I found this fun green fabric with small ‘Sesame Street’ street signs.
COOKIE MONSTER
Of course, no party would be complete without Cookie Monster on the dessert table. I already had a plastic jar that looked like a cookie jar and added some homemade chocolate chip cookies. I made the rainbow felt bunting but you can find similar options on etsy.

COOKIE MONSTER
I don’t remember where I found Honker, but I couldn’t leave him out of the party. And our toy wagon was a perfect addition with Cookie Monster and Grover going for a ride. It would also be fun to include Gonger “baking” the cookies on a small cookie tray.
With these Sesame Street centerpiece ideas, you can create a playful and memorable party that your child will love. Remember to have fun and enjoy the process of creating a special celebration for your little one!
